1971 Ford Thunderbird 4-Door Landau – Rare 'Suicide Door' Model, Red on Red
1971 Ford Thunderbird 4-Door Landau – Rare 'Suicide Door' Model, Red on Red with Black Vinyl Roof, 49k Miles Believed Original
Offered here is a distinctive and seldom-seen 1971 Ford Thunderbird 4-Door Landau, finished in Red with matching Red leather interior and a Black vinyl top. With just 49,202 miles—believed by the seller to be original—this Thunderbird represents a striking example of Ford's “luxury performance” flagship from the era, and one of the rare 4-door models with rear-hinged “suicide” back doors.
Our seller has owned the car for the past seven years and is including valuable documentation with the sale, such as the original dealer order form, the original warranty plate, factory options list, the original 1971 license plate, and factory shop manuals.
Cosmetically, the paint presents as “good” overall (faded too), though rust is noted at the lower fenders near the wheel openings (see photos) as well as an area under the vinyl top. The interior condition is exceptional, retaining much of its originality and presenting beautifully in red leather.
Mechanically, the engine and transmission were removed during current ownership; the transmission was rebuilt, and the engine was inspected, resealed, and fitted with a new Holley carburetor. A new radiator was also installed. The condition of the internals, along with the outstanding interior and supporting originality, lend credibility to the indicated mileage. Also under current ownership, the shocks and bushings have been replaced, and the seller notes the undercarriage is solid. The seller is not aware of any major mechanical defects or deficiencies.
This rare “Formal” 4-Door Landau presents as a striking and unusual luxury classic, with presence and collectability enhanced by its originality, documentation, and uncommon body style. An excellent opportunity for the Thunderbird enthusiast or collector of distinctive American luxury cars.
